Digital Marketing for Tradies: Stop Spending Money on Marketing That Doesn’t Ring Your Phone

For builders, electricians, plumbers, and every tradie who’s sick of paying for ads that attract tyre-kickers instead of paying customers

You got it because you’re good at what you do.

You can look at a job, see what needs to happen, and make it happen. On time. On budget. Done right.

But somewhere between quoting jobs, chasing suppliers, managing your crew, keeping SafeWork happy, and trying to get home before your kids are asleep — someone told you that you need to “do more marketing.”

So you tried.

Maybe you paid someone to build you a website. It looks alright. But the phone didn’t ring any differently.

Maybe you threw $2,000 at Google Ads last month. You got clicks. You got a few calls. Two of them were tyre-kickers who ghosted after the quote. One was a bloke who wanted you to undercut your price by 40%.

Maybe you tried posting on Instagram because some marketing guy on YouTube said it would “build your brand.” Three likes. One was your mum.

And now you’re sitting in your ute at 6:00 am, coffee going cold, thinking: “Is any of this actually working?”

Here’s the honest answer: probably not. But that’s not your fault—it’s a bigger issue than just your efforts.

Let’s do the numbers. Not feelings. Not vibes. The actual math.

If you’re spending $3,000 a month on marketing — website, ads, maybe a bloke doing your socials — and you’re converting at 2% when you should be converting at 6%, you’re leaving somewhere between $4,000 and $12,000 on the table. Every single month.

That’s not a theory. That’s revenue your competitor down the road is collecting while you’re still waiting for your agency to send you the first draft. Six weeks for one ad. Six weeks of meetings, revisions, and “we’ll get back to you on that.”

And every month, your marketing sounds like every other tradie in your area? That’s a month your market is being trained to ignore you.

Your brand — the thing that made Mrs Jones choose you over three other quotes — is drowning in a sea of AI-generated sameness. Generic websites. Generic Google Ads. Generic “we’re the experts” copy that sounds like it was written by a robot who’s never held a drill.

That costs you money. Which costs you jobs. Which costs you confidence. Which costs you more money.

The spiral doesn’t stop on its own.

Maybe not. If your phone rings enough, your diary is full three months out and you are turning work away, you do not need an agency. You need a second van and a better bookkeeper, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling something.

That is a real answer. Most of the trade businesses on the Northern Beaches that are genuinely flat out do not need marketing, and I would rather say so than take the money.

But there is something worth knowing about how word of mouth actually travels now, because it changed and nobody sent a memo.

Ten years ago, word of mouth was a closed loop. Your customer told her neighbour your name and a phone number, and the neighbour rang you. Two people, one conversation, done.

Now there is a step in the middle.

She says “use Dave, he did our bathroom, he was great.” The neighbour says thanks. Then — and this is the bit that changed — she goes and looks you up. She types your name into her phone before she rings. Everyone does. She is not checking whether her neighbour is lying. She just wants to see you exist.

If there is a Google listing with photos and reviews and a website that says what you do, the referral completes and you get the call. If there is a Facebook page last updated in 2019 and nothing else, something small happens that you will never hear about: she hesitates. And when she hesitates, she does the thing everyone does when they hesitate. She asks her phone for someone else.

You never find out. There is no missed call. The job just goes to a bloke whose name she did not have twenty minutes ago.

Here is the one that costs the most, and it is not about referrals at all.

Somebody moved into the street last month. Renovating. Good budget, plenty of work coming — hot water, switchboard, deck, the lot. She does not know a single person on that street well enough to ask.

She is not in your word-of-mouth network, and she cannot be, because the network is made of people who have lived here long enough to have opinions. So she does what she has done in every other city she has lived in.

She asks her phone. And her phone names four or five businesses.

Word of mouth cannot reach her. It is not a weakness in your reputation — it is a boundary on it. Your reputation travels exactly as far as the people who hold it, and she is outside that circle.

On one Saturday morning in September we asked four AI assistants — ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Google — who the best plumbers, electricians and carpenters on the Northern Beaches are. Thirty-six tests, nine questions, every one in a fresh session.

They named 79 businesses. They agreed on one.

Ask for the best plumber and the four assistants return fifteen different names between them, with not a single business appearing on all four lists. Fifty-one of the 79 were named once, out of 36 tests — which, given how much these answers move, is a coin landing the right way up rather than a result.

Five businesses out of 79 turn up often enough to count.

See the full Index — all 79 names and the method →

Not much, and less than anyone will try to sell you.

Word of mouth is still your best lead source and nothing here replaces it. What this does is stop it leaking at the two points it now leaks: the referral that goes looking and finds nothing, and the person who was never in the circle to begin with.

That is a smaller job than “marketing” and it is mostly a one-off. Your listing says what you actually do and where. Your site answers the four questions a homeowner asks before ringing anyone. Your licence number is in text a machine can read. Your reviews say the thing you are actually good at, in words your customers used.

Then the next time somebody says “use Dave, he did our bathroom” — and she looks you up, because she will — the referral completes.

Here’s what nobody tells you.

Your marketing guy has the same AI tools as every other marketing guy. ChatGPT. Jasper. Gemini. The same tools, the same prompts, the same “best practices” from the same YouTube tutorials.

They’re producing output — more blogs, more posts, more emails — while your actual outcomes stay frozen. Revenue flat. Cost per lead is climbing. Your pipeline is full of people who never convert.

We call this the Prompt Paradox. You have access to the engine, so you think you’ve hired a mechanic. But an engine without engineering is just noise.

And noise is exactly what your market is hearing.

Sound familiar? That’s because I’ve been working with tradies for 17 years and I hear this story every single week.

The problem isn’t effort. The problem isn’t even the tools. The problem is architecture. You’re running the right engine on the wrong foundation.

An Australian tradesman in high-visibility workwear kneeling and focusing on manual labor in a dark, dusty crawl space under a house, dramatically illuminated by a single flashlight beam cutting through the air.

I need to tell you something before we go any further.

I’m not a laptop warrior who grew up in a dark room.

I spent seven years in the mud and the sun. I was a Project Manager and BDM for national signage rollouts — managing crews and projects across 7 Westfield shopping centres. I managed over 100 Telstra installations. I worked on Woolworths and State Rail signage projects.

I wore the boots. I signed the safety papers. I clipped into a harness high up in the air.

And before all of that? I spent 9 months in Adelaide crawling under houses, underpinning foundations.

Adelaide — an arid state. The land cracks, shrinks, and moves. Bad news for foundations. The piers holding the house crumble, the floor sags, the walls buckle. Your house is in danger of collapsing.

My job was to crawl under the house, jack up the joists and bearers, stabilise the structure, dig down to solid ground, pour a concrete pad, and build a new brick support column. Most of the time, we couldn’t even kneel. Crawling through dark, confined spaces, hauling buckets of rubble through a maze of brick piers. The busted pier was always the furthest from the entrance.

I still rate it one of the worst back-breaking jobs I’ve ever had.

But here’s what it taught me: You don’t pick the paint before you pour the slab. You don’t start the work until the site is safe. And you don’t guess whether a wall will hold the weight.

I bring that same Zero-Failure Mentality to your marketing.

In construction, if the structural engineering is off by one percent, the project is a liability. I treat your marketing the same way. I don’t just write prompts. I build growth systems with structural integrity.

You can.

But the difference is like having access to a cockpit versus knowing how to fly the plane.

You wouldn’t let a homeowner rewire their own house just because they bought a multimeter from Bunnings. Same principle.

ChatGPT is an ingredient. What makes my approach different is how I architect a system specifically designed to generate revenue for tradies like you—built on deep industry knowledge and tailored to your market.

I build a system that deeply understands your specific market — the Northern Beaches aren’t the Inner West, and a plumber’s customer isn’t an electrician’s customer. A raw AI tool can never learn that context. It doesn’t know that “done right the first time” lands harder than “quality workmanship.” It doesn’t know that your best customers come from builder referrals, not Google searches.

Anyone can generate words. I engineer outcomes.

Most marketing agencies treat AI like a content vending machine. Insert prompt, receive generic output, repeat.

Unlike agencies treating AI as a generic content machine, I build a Compounding Intelligence System—a custom machine that keeps learning your business’s unique needs while you’re on-site.

Right now, your marketing is being written by a stranger. An algorithm that has never met your customers. Never heard the way Dave from Brookvale described why he chose you over three other quotes. Never felt the energy when you close a job face-to-face.

I changed that. I feed your system your real data — your best customer conversations, your winning quotes, your Google reviews, your site photos.

It learns to speak like you on your best day. Not a robot reciting features. You. The version of you that wins the job every time.

Traditional agencies move like council approvals. Six weeks for one ad.

I replace slow agency cycles with 48-hour rapid testing sprints, uniquely designed for tradie businesses. By testing multiple ideas fast, your system quickly finds what works best for your exact market, making progress your competitors can’t match.

One electrical contractor tested 14 ad variations in his first week. The winner outperformed his previous best by 340%. That’s not luck. That’s velocity.

The Deep Research Layer

Most marketing is built on hunches. “I think this will work.” “The designer liked the colours.”

That’s not a strategy. That’s gambling with a worse house edge.

I use Deep Research to see the truth before you spend a dollar. Your competitive landscape. Your customers’ actual language. The gaps your competitors are leaving wide open.

Prove the math before you start the engine.

You’re in the ute. Coffee’s hot this time.

Your phone buzzes. Three new enquiries overnight — and they already sound pre-sold because your system spoke to them in a voice that felt like a real conversation, not a robot reading a script. One of them has already filled out your enquiry form with job details that match your ideal project profile exactly.

Your competitor posted the same generic “quality workmanship, competitive pricing” ad they always do. You didn’t even notice. Because while they’re arguing about which stock photo to use, your Knowledge Moat is compounding. Every week, your system gets smarter. Every job refines the data. Every win trains the next one.

Your content sounds like you. Not like a robot. Not like your competitor. Not like every other tradie website pumping out the same AI-generated noise.

Same you. Same business. Same market. Different architecture.

You’re not renting ads anymore. You’re building an asset — a system that sits on your balance sheet and appreciates every single day.

So, where do we begin building this for you? We always start by proving the math.

I don’t ask you to commit to a system you haven’t seen work.

Every engagement starts with a 30-Day Revenue X-Ray — a deep diagnostic in which I dig into the guts of your business, stress-test your marketing, map your competitive landscape, and lay the foundation for your Knowledge Moat.

A builder doesn’t build without a site survey. An electrician doesn’t start without testing the circuit. I don’t engineer your growth without understanding your numbers.

At the end of 30 days, you’ll have:

A clear map of where your revenue is leaking — not opinions, not vibes, just the Brutal Math of what’s costing you jobs right now.

Competitive intelligence showing the gaps your rivals are leaving wide open — the positioning opportunities nobody else in your area sees.

Ready to stop wasting on marketing that doesn’t work? Book your 30-Day Revenue X-Ray consultation now and see how your business can turn marketing spend into real, measurable revenue.

A complete blueprint for your Revenue Engine — so you know exactly what you’re building before a single dollar is committed.

What the Revenue X-Ray Requires From You:

One 60-minute deep-dive conversation about your business. Access to your existing marketing data — I’ll tell you exactly what I need. And 30 days.

Let me show you the real numbers. Book your 30-Day Revenue X-Ray today and start building marketing that actually grows your business. Call now or hit the button to get started.

Total time from you across the full 30 days: under 3 hours.

For context: traditional agencies charge $6,000–$10,000 per month for the same six-week timelines you’re already frustrated with.

And here’s the guarantee: if your Revenue X-Ray doesn’t deliver at least three actionable insights you can implement immediately — regardless of whether you continue working with me — you pay nothing. You keep every piece of intelligence I uncover. I take the risk. You take the diagnostic.

I can make that offer because in every Revenue X-Ray I’ve delivered, I’ve never had to honour it. The numbers always tell a story worth hearing.

A humorous, cluttered photograph of an overwhelmed high-vis clad Australian tradie sitting at a desk late at night, trying to simultaneously talk on a phone tucked under his shoulder, use a hammer, hold an HR clipboard, and manage mountains of chaotic invoices and a calculator, illustrating "juggling all the hats.

That’s exactly why you need it.

The Revenue X-Ray was built for tradies who are on-site at 6am and still doing quotes at 9pm. That’s the whole point of a system that works while you work.

The X-Ray takes less of your time than the meeting you had last week about the marketing that isn’t working.

Think about it this way: you’d call in a structural engineer before you built on dodgy ground. This is the same thing for your marketing.

If the math doesn’t work, I’ll tell you. I’d rather lose a client, honestly, than keep one who shouldn’t be here. That’s not marketing spin. That’s the Zero-Failure Mentality.

I don’t need to imagine what it’s like to manage a crew, chase supplies, and try to win quotes while keeping SafeWork off your back. I’ve lived it.

I know the foreman’s job is to keep the site moving, not to sit in an office writing marketing plans.

I know that when the gear doesn’t show up, the whole job stops — and the same thing happens with your marketing when nobody’s actually running it.

I know that most tradies fall into one of four situations:

  • Doing OK, but want to do better. You’re making good money, but you know there’s more on the table if your marketing actually worked…
  • Stagnating. Jobs are coming in, but it’s the same revenue, same margin, same grind. You need a system that grows, not just maintains…
  • Free-falling. The building industry slows down, the big players move into your space, and suddenly the phone stops ringing. You need a lifeline, not a posting schedule…

I’ve worked with all four. The fix is different for each one. But the fix always starts with the math.

Every month you run your marketing on generic AI, you’re training your market to ignore you.

And your competitor who builds their Knowledge Moat first? They own that advantage permanently.

This isn’t a gap that shrinks over time. It widens. The tradies who move first build a compounding lead that late movers can never catch. That’s not marketing theory — that’s the Brutal Math of first-mover advantage in the AI age.

I take on three new Revenue X-Ray clients per month. Not because it’s a sales tactic — because the diagnostic process requires my full attention for 30 days, and I won’t dilute that for anyone.

Something on this page hit a nerve. That wasn’t random — that was pattern recognition. You recognised your own situation because these words accurately describe it.

Don’t let that momentum die. It’s harder to restart than to continue.

We tell you to put your prices on your website. So here are ours, with what’s in each one. Nothing’s hidden between the rungs.

What someone sees when they look you up, and what happened when we rang you as a customer. Two minutes. No card. Most people stop here, and that’s fine.

The full check, scored, with the fixes in order.

  • Your Google listing scored out of 20
  • Your website and its technical set-up checked
  • What ChatGPT and Google’s AI answers say when someone asks for a [trade] near them
  • Your reviews read against three competitors
  • Your website numbers as they stand today, so there’s a “before”
  • What your customers are thinking, taken from your own reviews
  • A fix list in the order to do it, presented to you in 45 minutes. Not a PDF you never open

If you go ahead with the build within 30 days, the A$670 comes off it in full. After 30 days it doesn’t.

Ninety days. This is the work we tell every tradie to get done properly, once.

Week one: the phone and the quote

  • Missed call on the tools? They get a text within thirty seconds
  • Every enquiry gets an answer with a price range and what happens next, day or night
  • Standard jobs get a ballpark from photos, so you only drive to the ones worth driving to
  • One polite follow-up on every quote at 48 hours, in your words

Tracking, set up properly from day one

  • Google Analytics 4 and Google Tag Manager on your site
  • Every tap-to-call, copied phone number and quote form counted, and sent to Google Ads if you run them
  • Visits from ChatGPT and other AI assistants caught in their own bucket, instead of lumped in with everything else
  • A “where did you hear about us?” question on your form, for the jobs no software can see
  • Your numbers on day one written down, so every month after is measured against them

Days 8–30: your Google listing, fixed properly once

  • Scored out of 20 and rebuilt to score
  • Same name, number and suburbs on Google, Bing, Apple Maps, Yelp, hipages and the rest
  • Every review answered
  • A one-page guide so you or your office can keep it up to date [DECISION FOR ROWAN — see note 3 above; delete this line if not ruled]

Days 31–90: the pages that quote for you

  • Three service pages with your real price ranges
  • A “what it costs and how we quote” page
  • The eight questions your customers actually ask, answered straight
  • Photos of your jobs, not stock

4. Monthly — A$870

Six months, then month to month.

  • The score: one text, one link, three numbers. Enquiries, quoted, won. Same three every month
  • New pages from your real jobs
  • Review requests going out, and every review answered
  • Where your jobs really came from, including the ones Google Analytics never sees

First year at the founding price: A$13,110. That’s the whole number.

We never discount the monthly. If something has to move, the build moves, and never below A$2,610.

Google Ads management — from A$970 a month, plus your ad spend. The two are quoted and invoiced separately, every month, so you always know what went to us and what went to Google. We only switch ads on once your phone’s being answered and your quotes are followed up. Ads into a business that misses calls just buys expensive practice at losing jobs.

A new website, if yours can’t carry the pages. For a tradie starting out, or one whose site can’t be fixed. Written for your trade, with your prices and your suburbs, and built so the Foundation pages have somewhere to live. Two sizes, fixed prices:

Starter site — A$1,770. Up to five pages:

  • Home: what you do, where you do it, and how to get a price
  • About: who turns up, your licence number and your insurance
  • Services: everything you do, on one page
  • Where we work: the suburbs you actually cover
  • Contact: tap-to-call and a quote form that asks for photos

Full site — A$2,970. Everything in the Starter site, plus up to five more pages:

  • A page for each main service you want more of, or
  • A page for each area you want more work in, and
  • A recent jobs page with your own photos

Both sizes include:

  • Every word written for your trade, by someone who’s quoted trade work. No templates filled with someone else’s words
  • Your prices, your licence number and your suburbs, in plain text on the page where customers and Google can read them
  • Built for phones first, because that’s where your customers are when something breaks
  • Your own job photos, not stock
  • Two rounds of changes
  • The website, the domain and the words are yours

With the Foundation build on top, you get three more service pages with your price ranges, the “what it costs and how we quote” page and your eight customer questions answered. A Starter site and the build together give you ten pages that each do a job.

What you’ll need to bring: your logo if you have one, your real prices, your licence number, the suburbs you work, and five photos from your last few jobs.

Social media calendars, graphic design and video. Plenty of people do those well, and we’ll tell you who.

Your real prices. Your licence number. The suburbs you actually work. Five photos a job, from your phone. If those aren’t coming, we’ll tell you in the first call and we won’t start.

What Other Business Owners Say

“Strategic Ai Marketing has done exactly that for my business. Everytime! With every marketing idea and with every platform, Rowan has shown in depth knowledge and made them work for my business.” — Neil Willis, Sydney Commercial Kitchens.

“Rowan knows his stuff, and I would ask the question: Can you afford NOT to have Rowan Shead piloting your Digital Marketing?” — Craig Heppell, Victor Realty.

“There are far fewer companies out there that can put together content that actually brings business in the door… Rowan’s rare ability is to be able to provide all three elements.” — Kyle Tucker, Dexios Corporation (USA)

What’s different about your tradie marketing?

Strategic AI Marketing’s tradie marketing is built by someone who started in trades. Founder Rowan Shead came up through Adelaide trades — crawling under houses — before construction project management (7 years of Westfield centre fit-outs, 100+ Telstra installations, Woolworths, State Rail), then 17+ years of direct response copywriting. That’s the lens: trade businesses are programmes of work where the deadline is the buyer’s decision. Either marketing pays back or it doesn’t. The numbers don’t care about the deck. Most marketing agencies pitching tradies have never been on a job site. We have.

Do you handle Google Ads or paid traffic for tradies?

Yes, but not first. Google Ads management is from A$970 a month, and your ad spend is invoiced separately so you can see exactly what went to Google. We switch ads on after the Foundation build, once missed calls get a text back, every enquiry gets an answer and every quote gets followed up. Before that, ads mostly pay for calls you’ll miss. We build the ads from the words your customers actually type, send them to a page that matches, and report booked jobs and enquiries rather than clicks. We don’t run Meta ads, social media or video.

How much do trade businesses spend with you?

Four steps, and nothing hidden between them.
The Snapshot is free. Two minutes, no credit card.
The **Revenue X-Ray is A670**.YourGooglelistingscoredoutof20,yourwebsitechecked,yourreviewsagainstthreecompetitors,whattheAIanswerssayaboutyou,andafixlistinorder,presentedin45minutes.Signthebuildwithin30daysandtheA670 comes off it in full.
The Foundation build is A2,670**forthefirstfive,**A3,470 after that. Ninety days: calls and quotes answered fast, tracking set up properly, your Google listing rebuilt, and the pages that quote for you.
Then it’s A$870 a month. The score every month, new pages from your jobs, and reviews kept moving. Six months, then month to month.
**Year one at the founding price is A13,110.**GoogleAdsmanagement,ifyouwantitlater,isfromA970 a month plus your ad spend, invoiced separately.
We don’t discount the monthly. If something has to move, the build moves, and never below A$2,610.

How quickly will I see leads from your work?

AI search engines re-crawl content on a 4–12 week cycle. If your trade business is at zero AI citations today, expect first lifts in 60–90 days after we ship the right work, not 30. The compounding shows up in months 3–6. We publish our own monthly AI citation chart at strategicai.marketing/we-did-this — verifiable in real time. Tradies who need leads THIS month should look at Google Ads or paid Facebook (different agency type). Tradies who want to build a compounding lead-generation asset over 12 weeks are who this firm works with.

Do you work with single-trade or multi-trade businesses?

Both, and it starts the same way: the Snapshot, then the X-Ray. There’s no turnover minimum. One ute and one ABN is fine. What there is: you have to give us your real prices, your real licence number and the suburbs you really work. If you won’t, we can’t build it, and we’ll tell you that in the first call rather than after you’ve paid. And it’s one business per trade, per catchment: Brookvale–Dee Why, Frenchs Forest, Manly, Mona Vale and Terrey Hills. Once you’re in, your competitor can’t buy the build from us.

How is this different from a generalist marketing agency?

Most generalist marketing agencies pitch tradies using the same templates they pitch to dentists, restaurants, and accountants — generic social calendars, “engagement” metrics, AI-generated blog content that no AI search engine actually cites. Strategic AI Marketing’s tradie work is grounded in operational understanding (7 years in construction PM, 7+ years in trades) and applied via 17+ years of direct response copywriting craft. We don’t produce social calendars. We build Knowledge Moats — proprietary marketing IP that compounds month-over-month and survives every AI model change. Different work, different outcomes.

Strategic AI Marketing — Strategy first. AI second. Revenue always.

17 years of direct response copywriting. 15 years of Google Ads. 7 years in construction. One question: what’s your marketing actually costing you?

Pick up the phone. Or send an email. Tell me what trade you’re in, what’s happening with your business, and what you want to fix.

I’ll tell you straight whether I can help. No pitch. No runaround.
